Boring bit part two; the Privacy Policy

I’ll ask questions if you try. Here goes…

What personal data we collect and why we collect it

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

Visitor comments may be shared and checked through an automated spam detection service.

An anonymised string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.  I'm not sure if that Gravatar thing is turned on though.

Contact forms

We use a plugin, this third-party contact form plugin:

  • does not track users by stealth;

  • does not write any user personal data to the database;

  • does not send any data to external servers;

E-Commerce / Order Fulfilment Data

We collect information about you during the checkout process on our store – how else are we going to be able to send you great, freshly roasted, freshly ground coffee? We collect the information required in order for us to provide a more than adequate service and fulfil your order efficiently.

While you visit our site, we think we track this kind of thing too:

  • Products you’ve viewed: we’ll use this to, for example, show you products you’ve recently viewed, this data will be used for Google re-marketing and other Google products including analytics.

  • Location, IP address and browser type: we’ll use this for purposes like estimating taxes and shipping and preventing fraud.

  • Shipping address: we’ll ask you to enter this so we can, for instance, estimate shipping before you place an order, and send you the order!

We’ll also use cookies to keep track of cart contents while you’re browsing our site, but you cannot buy cookies, biscuits or shortbread from the site.  But you might get a free biscuit if you come to the roastery and buy a coffee.

When you purchase from us, we’ll ask you to provide information including your name, billing address, shipping address, email address, phone number, credit card/payment details and optional account information like username and password. (I’m not sure we do the last two bits do we?).  We’ll use this information for purposes, such as, to:

  • Send you information about your account and order

  • Respond to your requests, including any potential refunds and complaints

  • Process payments and prevent fraud

  • Set up your account for our store

  • Comply with any legal obligations we have, such as calculating taxes

  • Improve our store offerings

  • Send you marketing messages, if you choose to receive them

If you create an account, we will store your name, address, email and phone number, which will be used to populate the checkout for future orders.  Not sure we do that bit but I’ll leave it in.  Just in case, yeah?

We generally store information about you for as long as we need the information for the purposes for which we collect and use it, and we are not legally required to continue to keep it. For example, we will store order information for as many years required for boring tax and accounting purposes. This includes your name, email address and billing and shipping addresses.

We will also store comments or reviews, if you choose to leave them.  But not nasty ones.  We don’t want them.

What we share with others

We share information with third parties who help us provide our orders and store services to you; for example —

  • DELIVERY COMPANIES – Probably the Royal Mail to be honest, it will probably be Anne.  We like Anne.  We will share your shipping information and if required any invoices or data required to fulfil the delivery of your order, process a claim for a missing parcel or provide information for customs and other legal reasons.

  • GOOGLE – We share statistics from our website with satan Google, including page views and other actions on a page, popular products and other data that can be used for Analytics in improving the customers experience, Google re-marketing and other Google enhancement features.

  • PAYMENT GATEWAYS – All payments taken are securely processed on our merchant providers website/s. These have their own privacy policies and can be seen in our Data Protection Policy.

  • OTHER THIRD PARTIES – We share necessary data with other third parties, plugins and data processors in order to fulfil your order and give you a smooth experience on our website. We will continue to update our policies and inform our customers of all the third parties and reasons for sharing the data. No data is ever sold or misused by us.  Not sure about that section, but the statement about selling data is bang on, we seriously won’t do that.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracing your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognise and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username/e-mail). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.  That is so boring that we’ll have to charge for the service, again payment can only be received in licorice allsorts.

Boring bit part three; the Returns Policy

Do we really need a policy for this?  Everyone has consumer rights by law anyway, so why write a policy out too?  Look, if you have received some coffee from us and it is damaged, let us know and we'll sort something out.  It's no biggie, we're good people.  If there is a problem with the coffee itself, get in touch.  Working the world like it used to be, before the accountants took over.

We've spent enough time over the years in bland boring board rooms surrounded by (mostly) men in rubbish ties and square hair cuts discussing this policy or that policy for the sake of protecting the backside of the head dude back at head office who is only interested in protecting his own backside anyway.

Enough.
